Accident black spots to watch out for this festive season

The festive season is already here and while many Kenyans take a break from work to travel upcountry to join family members, others plan to visit the city for the holidays. There are those who opt to visit other local tourist destinations.

Either way, all these are going to be involved in one means of transport or another.  Road transport is one of the common means used by most Kenyans during the festive season. Rush, public service vehicles on unfamiliar routes and congestion often characterise road transport during the holiday season. As a result, numerous accidents occur.

In the first 20 days of December, the country lost more than 100 people in separate road accidents and road crashes. Notably, the accidents have occurred in popular accident black spots.

The Salgaa black spot, for instance, has so far claimed numerous lives since December 1, 2017. While some of these accidents have been blamed in reckless driving, others have seen fingers pointed at poor road design: a reason for extra caution this festive season.

Apart from the popular accident black spots on Kenyan roads, we bring you other black spots for your caution this festive season. For those in the capital city, take note of the Kasarani G.S.U Stretch, Westlands Museum Roundabout, Westlands Kabete Road, Mombasa Road between Sorrel headquarters and Cabanas, Jogoo Road near Maziwa Stage and Waiyaki Way near Kangemi Fly Over. These, according to the Kenya Police are accident black spots within the city.

If driving on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway, accident spots to watch out for include: Machakos – Wamunyu road section at Kithangathini, Mlolongo – Small World Club, Junction to Namaga, Mto Wa Mawe Bridge, Konza Junction to Salama Road Section – Mombasa/Nairobi at Chumvi Area, Salama – Sultan Hamud Road Section, Emali Simba Market to Kibwezi and the stretch between Mtito and Tsavo River.

Although road design has had an impact on the rising number of road crashes, Chief Inspector Walter Kiptala, the Salgaa Traffic Base Commandant blames most of the accidents of lack of basic values by drivers and passengers.

The Salgaa stretch has witnessed many accidents over the years. There are, however, other accident black spots to watch out for in the Rift Valley region. These include the Kericho-Kipkelion junction, Kericho – Litein Road Section, Kericho – Kaitui Section, Endebes Eldoret Road Section and Gilgil Nakuru Road Kasambara Area.

The Kenya Police records Mbale – Vihiga Road Section, Kakamega Chavakali Road section and Kakamega – Mumias Road – Makunga areas as accident black spots in the western region of Kenya.
