Student Designed Donkey Cart Unveiled During World Water Day

Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Eugene Wamalwa launched the Inkua Donkey Cart, designed by College of Engineering and Technology (COETEC) students during the World Water Day National Celebrations held in Naivasha, Tuesday, March 22, 2016.
The donkey cart aims at ensuring that there is a safer, efficient and effective way of transporting water especially in the rural areas.
The Cabinet Secretary lauded the University for the design and engineering of the donkey cart
and encouraged the water companies present to partner with academic institutions to help tackle some of the water problems facing the country.
On her part, in an earlier interview, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mabel Imbuga, said the university is committed to see the project escalate throughout the country and address the issue of clean water transportation in the rural areas. She urged the government and other organisations to partner with academic institutions to empower the masses through collaborative research and initiatives especially in the field of science and agriculture.
“I make a passionate appeal to the government and the private sector to invest in universities. The pool of talent, creativity and innovative ideas in our institutions is immense,” said Prof. Imbuga.
Africaqua Chief Executive Officer, David Kuria gave an assurance that in collaboration with the University, they will continue with the production of the cart in order to effectively and holistically solve the water transportation problem especially in the rural areas.
The design of the donkey cart and the production of two prototypes that were launched benefitted from the support of Africaqua and Water.org amounting to Kshs 1.3 million.
